When it comes to applying a skeptic’s eye to science and evidence, the upcoming EBD Conference has just the right clinician to address the topic—Steven Novella, M.D.
“Implementing Science in Practice,” the annual ADA Evidence-Based Dentistry Champions 2.0 Conference, is set for May 9-10 at ADA Headquarters with Dr. Novella as the keynote speaker.
A neurologist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Novella is a well-known scientific thought-leader, said Dr. Robert Weyant, a longtime EBD Champions Conference speaker.
Dr. Novella employs social media platforms and is a popular blogger and podcaster on the topics of scientific thinking, and lapses therein, Dr. Weyant said.
He hosts and produces “The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe,” a weekly science podcast, and writes the NeuroLogicaBlog, a daily blog that addresses news and issues in general science, scientific skepticism, philosophy of science, critical thinking, and the intersection of science with the media and society. He also is the founder and executive editor of the website Science-Based Medicine and president and co-founder of the New England Skeptical Society.
Dr. Weyant is a fan. He listens to Dr. Novella’s podcast regularly.

“It deals with a lot of issues around the kinds of things that you would see in the Champions Conference,” said Dr. Weyant, professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
“It talks about critical thinking, skepticism, applying evidence to reach for rational conclusions. Dr. Novella is well known for being somebody who’s outspoken in the area of medicine on using sound evidence and good judgment and critical thinking.”
At EBD Champions 2.0 in May, Dr. Novella will explore the topic “Why Is Science-Based Medicine Important?”
“I’m very much looking forward to hearing him speak,” Dr. Weyant said. “I listen to his podcast every week so I’m very interested in what he typically has to say. So I’m very curious to see how he’ll approach his keynote speaking at the Champions conference.”
Registration is open until March 31 with a fee of $150 for ADA members and $225 for nonmembers.
